Akrilik boya, Meksikalıların dış mekanlar için her türlü doğa olaylarına dayanıklı bir boya arayışı ile ortaya çıkmıştır. 1920'li yıllarda ressamlar yeni boya denemeleri yapmaya başladılar. 1930'lu yıllarda New York'taki Sigiures atölyesi daha dayanıklı bir boya için deneyler yapmaya başladılar. 1950'li yıllarda ise Amerika'da akrilik boya üretildi. 1960'da İngiltere'de, 1965'lerde Fransa'da, 1990'larda Türkiye'de kullanılmaya başlandı. Dayanıklılığı ve birçok yüzeyde kullanılabilmesi sebebiyle günümüzde çok fazla kullanılmaktadır. Akrilik boya su bazlıdır ve çabuk kurur. Bu nedenle çok detay gerektiren resimler için zaman problemi oluşturur. Palete sıkılan boya bile resim bitmeden kuruyabilir, bu nedenle palete kullanılacak kadar boya sıkılmalıdır.
